Preparing for Spring Break with the Family

If you’ll be taking a spring break vacation with your family this year, it’s about time to start planning. I encourage everyone to get away from work a little bit each year (if they can manage) so they can reconnect with their family and remember what they’re working so hard for. If you’ll be taking a spring vacation, here are some tips to help you get started.

1. Plan early!

The sooner you plan, the more you’ll save. Hotels, airfare, car reservations, and even attraction prices can be cheaper if you buy them well in advance. I recommend making those plans as soon as possible if you’ll be traveling in March, April or May.

2. Bring lots of sun protection

Lots of people forget to bring sunscreen during spring vacations because they don’t think it will be that hot, but the sun can burn even when it’s cool out. Wear your sun block, especially babies.

3. Pick something that isn’t exhausting

Keep in mind that mom and dad have to go back to work and the kids have to go back to school once the trip is over. Plan something that isn’t physically draining. Instead of the 10-day hike on the Appalachian Mountains, pick some place where you can at least spend your last day relaxing.

4. Give your vehicle a check up

If you’re taking a road trip, give your car a once-over before embarking. Nothing puts a damper on a vacation like a broken down car in a place you don’t know well. The towing fees alone could force you to head home.

5. Bring plenty of entertainment for the kids

Bored children in the car or on the plane are a huge pain. Bring plenty of things to distract them.  :)

6. Don’t advertise your trip on Facebook

If you have lots of Facebook friends that you don’t know well, avoid announcing that you’re leaving in a status. Hold off on putting pictures up until you return home. Some less-than-honest people might take advantage of your absence by taking a trip to your home.

7. Ship that baby gear ahead of you

Traveling with a baby means bringing a lot of stuff. Sometimes you need your whole set up. Instead of hauling the car seat, stroller, play yard and a week’s worth of diapers and wipes through the airport, ship that stuff ahead of you to your destination. It doesn’t cost that much more than the extra luggage fees on airlines anyway.
