Frequently Asked Questions
General
The secret to the Zipadee-Zip’s success is the patented starfish design. Unlike other wearable blankets, the starfish shape creates slight resistance in the wingspan that provides the same cozy, secure feeling of a swaddle while allowing your baby to move around freely. The Zipadee-Zip also keeps your baby warm and cozy all night long.
Is your baby waking up more often at night? Is your baby starting to roll over? If you’re nodding your head “yes”, it’s time to consider transitioning out of the swaddle. If your baby is showing these signs of outgrowing his swaddle, the Zipadee-Zip may be the next step for you. Swaddles are cozy and comforting, but there’s a time and place to transition out of the swaddle, and the Zipadee-Zip is that transition. As a swaddle transition, the Zipadee-Zip provides that cozy womb-like environment, but in a safe way that provides plenty of room to push up, roll over, and wiggle. The Zipadee-Zip may be right for your baby if he meets the following criteria:
- Your baby can roll over
- Your baby is 3+ months
- Your baby weighs at least 12 pounds
Babies this young still have a very strong Moro reflex AKA the “startle reflex.” Swaddling an infant prevents that “startle” from waking up your baby, which leads to a much sounder sleep. Slight resistance in the arm span of the Zipadee-Zip really is ideal for the transition so if a baby is too tiny, the Zipadee-Zip might be a bit too big to provide that.
Tip: Even if your baby is not ready to transition right now, it’s a good idea to keep a Zipadee-Zip ready to go in your nursery. The need for one will seemingly happen overnight!
First things first: every baby is different. Some babies make an immediate transition from the swaddle to the Zipadee-Zip while others take a little time to get used to their newfound freedom.
To ensure that your baby’s transition is as smooth as possible, keep these tips in mind:
- Ensure that you have the right fit for your baby - not too loose or too small.
- Ensure that there is slight resistance in the wing-span: This is a key element in helping babies feel secure once the swaddle is gone.
- Use the Zipadee-Zip for naps first to ease into the transition; then build up to using it during the night.
- Don’t try to use the Zipadee-Zip too soon: If your little one is still sleeping well while swaddled and hasn't yet rolled from back to front, it may be best to wait until they are showing signs they are ready for more freedom. Be sure to have the Zipadee-Zip on hand for when this happens though, as it literally can happen overnight!
Every baby regulates their body heat differently so please use your best judgment. If you’re unsure, we suggest that you mimic your own layers depending on the temperature of your house and nursery. Some babies sleep with light PJs underneath while others simply wear their diaper underneath the Zipadee-Zip! If your baby sleeps colder, or if you live in a colder climate, do not use a loose blanket to add warmth. Instead, we suggest either using a Fleece Zipadee-Zip or adding layers under the regular Zipadee-Zip for added coziness.
Tip: Babies tend to sleep better in cooler temperatures so avoid the temptation to add too many layers. According to the American Academy of Pediatricians, babies do best sleeping in a room with cooler temperatures, about 68–72˚F.
Yes, the Zipadee-Zip helps with the Moro reflex. Moro reflex, also known as the startle reflex, is when your baby suddenly wakes up feeling concerned or panicked. The Zipadee-Zip helps keep your baby feeling safe and secure, which can prevent startle reflex.
Yes! The Zipadee-Zip is designed to remain loose throughout the legs and body which promotes healthy hip development and prevents hip dysplasia. The Zipadee-Zip also accommodates little ones with hip dysplasia who wear a brace while sleeping.
Tip: If your baby wears a brace at night, order the Zipadee-Zip size that your baby wears normally; there is no need to size up to fit the brace.
Yes! The Zipadee-Zip is designed specifically so that your little one can push up, roll over, and wiggle around safely and freely.
There’s a Zipadee-Zip that’s right for every baby. The Zipadee-Zip works for any type of method that a baby uses to self-soothe including pacifiers and thumb-sucking. Because babies can feel their thumbs through the wing tips, many babies continue to thumbsuck (through the tips!) and self-soothe while wearing their Zipadee-Zip. What about picking up a pacifier? Even though a baby's hands are covered, they retain the ability to pick up a pacifier that has fallen out.
A baby can actually use the size large until they are upwards of 2-2.5 years old. This is right around the time when a toddler transitions from the crib to a bed.
Most caregivers move their little ones out of the Zipadee-Zip close to the 2-year mark. The Large Zipadee-Zip is intended to be the last step a baby takes before they go to PJ’s. There is no transition between sizes but the Large is what equips them to get used to full freedom of movement so they are able to move to PJ’s with no problems or transition whatsoever! There is no need to rush and there’s no harm at all in using it longer (if anything, it makes the move to PJ’s easier the older they are).
Once your little one has been in the size large for a while, we have a great graduate product called the Flying Squirrel PJ that goes up to size 5T and has optional hand and foot coverings!
We’d love to hear your stories about your little Zipadee-Zip graduates!

Size Guides
Important: The ideal Zipadee-Zip fit has a slight resistance in the arm span. This is intentional as the cozy fit provides the snugness to help baby self-soothe as he transitions away from the swaddle.
Still not sure which size is best for your little one? Keep these tips in mind:
Extra Small:
Although this is the smallest size available, the extra small is not intended to be used as a swaddle alternative. Choose extra small only if your baby meets the age requirement (i.e. at least three months old) and can roll, but is on the smaller end of the weight/height chart.
Small:
Most babies between four and eight months will fit in the small Zipadee-Zip, but the main determining measurement is height. Choose the small Zipadee-Zip if your baby is rolling, is between four and eight months, and is between 25 and 29 inches long.
Tip: For babies just starting to transition, small is a good choice as it provides that resistance in the arm span, which is very soothing to a baby who is used to sleeping in a swaddle.
Medium:
The medium Zipadee-Zip is ideal for babies who have already been using the Zipadee-Zip. Choose the medium if your baby can roll over, is between six and 12 months old, and is 29-33 inches tall.
Tip: If your baby is just starting to transition, choose small and then work up to medium.
Large:
The large Zipadee-Zip fits most one- to two-year-old babies who are between 33-37 inches tall. Choose the large if your baby:
- Needs a wearable blanket
- Needs to prevent scratching
- Is transitioning from crib to toddler bed (the cozy nature of the Zipadee-Zip encourages your baby to stay in bed)
***Do not choose large if your baby is just starting to transition out of a swaddle.
Is your little one outgrowing his Zipadee-Zip? Is it time to transition to the Flying Squirrel? Not sure where to start? We’ve got you covered! The Flying Squirrel PJs come in three sizes:
- 12-24 months
- 2T/3T
- 4T/5T
Need more guidance?
Keep these sizing tips in mind:
Size 12-24 months:
If your little one kicks off his covers in the night, you might be ready for the Flying Squirrel PJ. Intended as a smooth transition from the Large Zipadee-Zip, the Flying Squirrel PJ features optional hand and foot coverings to keep those little toes and hands warm.
Tip: Choose the Size 12-24 Flying Squirrel PJ after the Large Zipadee-Zip as a way to introduce PJs to your little one.
Size 2/3T:
Believe it or not, this size is ideal for toddlers wearing 3T all the way up to a children’s size 4!
What to expect from the fit:
- Younger toddlers in this size will have a baggy fit, with ankle cuffs that convert into socks and wrist cuffs that convert into mittens.
- Older children in this size will experience a more snug fit. Choose this size if your child is outgrowing the large Zipadee-Zip.
Size 4/5T:
Like the 2/3T, the 4/5T covers a wide range of sizes. Children wearing a size 4 through 6 can wear the 4/5 T Flying Squirrel PJ. Again, these PJs are generously sized to allow for the adjustable fit, the convertible cuffs, and overall comfort.
Now that you know what size you need, the only problem is which pattern you want!
Fabric
All of our fabrics are specially engineered to be soft and breathable to prevent the risk of overheating. This makes them ideal even for babies with eczema or sensitive skin. We never have and never will spray our garments with any chemicals.
We would love to be able to have 100% cotton Zipadee-Zips, but to do that, we would have to treat them heavily with chemicals for babies over the age of eight months to adhere to CPSC regulations. That is simply not an option for us as the safety of the baby is our number one priority! We do, however, have wonderful 100% organic cotton Zipadee-Zips in size extra small and small, as well as cotton blend Zipadee-Zips available to choose from. We go to great lengths to comply with standards and testing without using chemical treatments on our products. We use fibers that are naturally flame retardant to accomplish this so no harm is caused to your little ones. This prevents any risk to the babies from ingesting or being exposed to harsh flame-retardant chemicals. We are one of only a handful of baby companies in the world that use this unique, patented technology. We will always ensure that your little ones are sleeping both soundly AND safely!
The organic cotton option is available in two sizes: extra small and small. Our materials and sizing options are restricted due to regulations of the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission. Current regulations require that: 100% cotton pajamas for babies 9+ months of age must be treated with flame retardants This means that 100% cotton pajamas for babies under six months are not required to be treated with flame retardants. The extra small and small Zipadee-Zips fit babies under the age of nine months, so they are not chemically treated. Each organic Zipadee-Zip is made from 100% organic cotton ring-spun yarn.
Ready to wash your Zipadee-Zip? Your Zipadee-Zip is going to get so much daily use, so it’s important to keep these tips in mind:
- Wash your Zipadee-Zip fully zipped and inside out (this reduces the overall wear and tear).
- Use wash in warm water.
- Line dry or use low heat.
Please note for optimal wear and to greatly reduce any pilling we recommend line drying If your baby sucks on the thumbs/tips of the wings, pre-treat the wings to remove stubborn drool marks. Spray with white vinegar and let it set before washing.
****A quick note on pilling: Pilling is natural! Because our Zipadee-Zips are never chemically treated, the fabric may pill after many washes. Please note that pilling - in no way - reflects the quality and durability of the fabric used to make your Zipadee-Zip. We are committed to creating a product made in a way that is safe for your little ones while still complying with all manufacturing regulations.
Once your baby is ready for the bigger Zipadee-Zip, you won’t have to sacrifice quality or safety. Rest assured, our sleepwear is not treated with chemical flame retardants but still adheres to strict United States safety standards. We meet the government’s standards by using a proprietary blend of fibers that are naturally flame-resistant, but this does mean that certain sizes (medium and up) are not 100% cotton. At Sleeping Baby, we are proud to comply with baby safety standards without using any chemical treatments on our products.
