10 Important Fire Safety Tips for Kids

fire safety tips for kids

Fire safety is super important. Everyone needs to be prepared to act in case the home catches on fire. Here are some essential tips that you should go over with your kids. Make sure everyone understands these so no one gets hurt.

1. NEVER play with matches. Or anything else that makes fire. Tell your kids to let an adult know if they find matches or a lighter laying on the ground.

2. Look out for fire hazards. Is the fireplace messy? Are any electrical cords frayed? Did someone dump ashes in the trash bin? Is any furniture blocking the exit? Look out for anything that could cause a fire or make getting outside difficult if a fire occurs.

3. Keep an eye on those smoke detectors. Smoke detectors warn us about fires or smoke if you are unaware (like when we’re sleeping). If they are blinking or beeping unusually, tell an adult so they can make sure the devices are in working order.

4. Have a fire safety plan. When there’s an emergency like a fire, it can be tough to think about what need to be done. The best way to make sure everyone stays safe is to have a fire safety plan. It should detail how to get out of the house and where everyone should meet, which neighbors to tell and how to call 911.

5. Practice that plan! A plan is no good if you don’t practice. Talking about it isn’t enough. Have regular fire drills so everyone is 100% sure about what to do. Make sure all windows and doors open quickly in an emergency and that everyone knows how to get to the meet-up spot.

6. Hide from the smoke. In the event of a fire, it’s the smoke that gets people first. Fall to the ground and crawl around your home so you breathe clean air.

7. Get outside. Some people panic during a fire and hide in what they think is a safe spot. You never want to hide during a fire. Not only are you susceptible to injury from the fire, but emergency workers won’t be able to find you quickly. Get outside as fast as you can.

8. Don’t run back inside. If you made it out of a burning house, never run back in to get something or someone. There’s no telling if you will make it back out safely. Stay at your meet-up spot

9. Stop, drop and roll. I’m sure you’ve heard this one before. If your clothes catch on fire, you’ll panic and might run. The best way to put them out is to stop where you are, drop to the ground and roll around to squash the flames.

10. Know your emergency numbers. Obviously, you should call 911, even if you think someone else has. Sometimes during an emergency, no one calls for help because they assume someone else did. Always call. Then, call a neighbor, relative or friend who will respond if the family needs help.

Written by Stephanie Parker from Sleepingbaby.com, inventor of the Zipadee-Zip

The motto for Sleeping Baby, makers of the Zipadee-Zip, is: “Inspiring Dreams One Night at A time,” and that, in a nutshell, is how it all started…with one little dream that has since become the Parker family’s reality. When Brett and Stephanie Parker’s daughter, Charlotte, was born, the feeling that welled up inside of them was indescribable; they never realized until first looking into those baby blues of hers that they were even capable of that kind of love.

When it was time to transition baby from swaddling, the Parkers tried every sleep sack on the market and every swaddle weaning trick they could find for nearly two weeks and nothing worked to get baby Charlotte to fall and stay asleep.

Stephanie became determined to restore sleep and sanity to their household and set out to find a solution that would soothe Charlotte’s startle reflex and provide her the cozy womb-like environment she loved so much but still give her the freedom to roll over and wiggle around in her crib safely. Out of sheer desperation and exhaustion, the Zipadee-Zip was born. The first Zipadee-Zip(R) Stephanie put together on her little sewing machine worked like magic!

To date, tens of thousands of Zipadee-Zips have been sold and all from word-of-mouth marketing. It is so rewarding for the Parkers to see other parents and babies getting the sleep they both need and deserve!
