  • Sizing and Fit

    • Small (3-6 months old) 12-18lbs for babies up to 28 inches tall
Medium (6-12 months old) 19-26 lbs for babies up to 32 inches tall
Large (12-28 months old) 26-34 lbs for babies up to 39 inches tall

      * The best fit is when a baby has to push on the fabric to extend fully... it's that resistance that helps ease the transition and encourages self-soothing.

      MORE SIZING TIPS

      SIZE SMALL:
The small is geared towards the 12-18 or 19 pound mark and is designed for babies up to 6 months old. Some little ones use the small until 22lbs. The length of the zipper alone on all the Zipadee-Zips is 24 inches (remember that a baby’s head makes up a good portion of their height so the small will fit most little ones under that 6 month mark with no problem.

If a mom is using the Zippy as a SWADDLE TRANSITION and their little one is around 17-18 lbs and is under 6 months old, I really recommend getting the Small for the transition. I recommend the smaller fit to start because there is more resistance in that wing-span which gives the baby more of a feeling of being enclosed and cozy. This womb-like sensation is what helps ease the transition off of the swaddle.

Under 6 months old, a baby’s startle reflex will still be coming into play and the Zipadee-Zip is most effective if there’s slight resistance in the arm-span of the fit so a baby has to push on the fabric a little to extend fully. That slight resistance is what gives a little one the sense of enclosure they need to soothe the startle, and feel nice and cozy during the transition off of the swaddle. Some moms who have never swaddled their little ones will use the Zipadee-Zip to transition a baby from sleeping in a swing or a Rock and Play sleeper to a crib and a snugger fit is encouraged for that transition as well.

If your baby weighs above 18 pounds they are on the cusp of moving to a Medium and may not be in the Small for very long (although my daughter wore her small until she was over 22lbs) which is why parents will usually get a Small for an easier transition and a Medium for once the baby is comfortable with the new-found freedom. If you decide to go with a size Medium so that your little one can grow into it, make sure to do nap times in the Zipadee-Zip first for a while before moving to night time sleep. That will help ease your little one into the freedom over a shorter period of time. Ideally you want to have resistance in the arm span if you are transitioning from the swaddle.

If, a mom is only using the Zippy as an alternative to PJ’s, to keep a baby’s hands warm or to prevent scratching (for babies with eczema for example), there’s no harm in a little extra room. If a baby is on the cusp of moving to a size medium and doesn’t need any help with a transition, going to a larger size is fine.

      SIZE MEDIUM:
If your baby is over 6 months old AND over 18lbs, go with the medium. Past 6 months old, the startle reflex has started to subside so it’s easier to make the transition off of the swaddle in a slightly larger size as long as your baby is 18 lbs or over. If your baby is right on the 18lbs mark, and you don’t want to go with the small after reading the information above, a more gradual transition might be helpful if you do decide to go with the medium since there will still be room to grow in that size and there will be less resistance in the arm-span to help with soothing. In the event that your little one is right on cusp of moving between sizes it may help to do naps for a while before night time sleep just so that your little one has more time to get used to the new-found freedom. Most babies wear the Medium until 12 months old or older.

As I stated before, if the Zipadee-Zip is not being used as a transition solution or is not being used to help improve sleep or self-soothing skills, the resistance in the arm-span is not as important and more freedom in the fit will be just fine!

      SIZE LARGE:
This size is NOT meant for the transition off of the swaddle but after a baby has already made that transition with a smaller size. I also do not recommend skipping the size Medium and going from the Small to the Large. There is a reason behind how the Zipadee-Zips are sized as it provides a gradual transition to full freedom making the move to PJ’s instantaneous and easy! The size Large is very big and can fit most 2.5 year olds. The difference between a size Medium and a size Large is pretty significant. The Large gives a baby lots of extra room with no resistance at all. This is the size you want to move to after the transition and before your little one sleeps freely in normal PJ’s. I highly recommend using the Large for a while before moving to PJ’s. It will still give them the security of being enclosed and cozy but will allow them to get used to moving around completely unrestricted. This size is also a perfect alternative for parents who haven’t swaddled and just want to put their little ones in a wearable blanket that keeps those little hands warm at night and prevents scratching. Parents who have never swaddled or even never used the Zipadee-Zip in smaller sizes will often get the Zipadee-Zip in a Large as a solution to keep their wiggly little toddler from climbing out of the crib. It also has helped a lot of parents make the transition from crib to toddler bed much easier as it encourages little ones to stay in their bed.

    • 2T 24 months
      3T 2-3 years
      4T/5T 3-5 years

*The Flying squirrel is designed to fit super baggy. Sizing can be adjusted by pushing the wrist and ankle cuffs up and down. The ankle cuffs are intended to stay around the ankles when a toddler is awake and then when they sleep they can turn into socks.

      MORE SIZING TIPS

      SIZE 2T (24 Months):
Our Flying Squirrel PJ was created out of an expressed need from my customers for a next size up from the Zipadee-Zip. It has optional hand and foot coverings which make it ideal for little ones who kick their blankets off. This size is NOT intended to replace the large Zipadee-Zip. It is designed to come after the size Large Zipadee-Zip or for early transitioners to PJ’s out of the Zipadee-Zip. The reason we recommend going to the Large Zipadee-Zip after the Medium Zipadee-Zip and not straight to the Flying Squirrel from a Medium Zippy is because the Large Zippy still provides a little one with that fully enclosed feeling while still being loose enough to prepare a little one for that move to PJ’s. We strategically size the Zipadee-Zips so that moving to PJ’s at around 18-24 months is super easy! The 12-24 Month/2T Flying Squirrel size is more geared towards the upper end of that age range but because of the way they fit (the bagginess in the arms and legs can moderate the fit (lengthened or shortened) by the wrist and ankle cuffs so they are also perfect for younger toddlers as well!

      SIZE 3T:
This size fits a toddler that wears 2T-3T clothes and can even fit most 4 year olds. That’s what is so great about the flying squirrel… the bagginess in the fit allows a toddler to wear them for a long time and be able to pull the ankle cuffs down to convert them to socks! The wrist cuffs can also turn into mittens as well!

      SIZE 4T/5T:
This fits a toddler that wears 4T-5T clothes. They are generously sizes so they can be adjusted to cover the hands and feet if desired.

    • A baby can actually use the size large until they are upwards of 2-2.5 years old.  This is right around the time when a toddler transitions from the crib to a bed. Most moms move their little ones out of the Zippy close to the 2 year mark. The Large Zipadee-Zip is intended to be the last step a baby takes before they go to PJ’s.  There is no transition between sizes but the Large is what equips them to get used to full freedom of movement so they are able to move to PJ’s with no problems or transition whatsoever!

There is no need to rush and there’s no harm at all in using it longer (if anything, it makes the move to PJ’s easier the older they are).  Once your little one has been in the size large for a while, we have a great graduate product called the Flying Squirrel PJ that goes up to size 5T and has optional hand and foot coverings!

  • Using The Zipadee-Zip

    • The star-shaped pointed sleeves and star-fish design is Patent Pending because it inspires sounder sleep than any other wearable blankets on the market. The slight resistance in the wing-span allows a baby to move around freely while still providing the enclosed, cozy sensation babies enjoy so much in the swaddle and the womb.

The ‘Moro’ or startle reflex is what prevents a baby from sleeping soundly and jolts a baby awake suddenly. The reason babies are startled is because they wake up and can’t feel their edges like they were able to in the womb. The Zipadee-Zip provides those ‘edges’ or that womb like environment while still providing them the freedom to roll around and use their arms and hands safely. This is why the Zipadee-Zip will work when all other products parents have tried to transition their babies typically fail.

    • We have a lot of hand and thumb suckers that use the Zipadee-Zip!  Babies will often suck on the tips of the Zippy and are often able to self-soothe even better than if their hands were free because of the full enclosure and comfort of the Zippy, plus the ability soothe through the wing tips.  The Zipadee-Zip really works for any type of method a baby uses to self-soothe!  Even though a baby's hands are covered, they are also able to pick up a pacifier that has fallen out and easily put it back in with a little practice.

  • Tips On Transitioning Off Of The Swaddle

    • The Zipadee-Zip is intended as a swaddle transition. It’s meant for babies 3 months and older and it provides a woomb-like environment, but with room to push up, roll over, and wiggle around safely. The slight resistance in the "wing-span" helps a baby self-soothe and sleep better than they would in a traditional sleep sack or PJs.

Is Your Baby Ready for the Zipadee-Zip?
The Zipadee-Zip is designed for babies who meet all of the following criteria:

      • Your baby can roll over
      • Your baby is 3 months or older
      • Your baby is over 12 pounds

The Zipadee-Zip is not intended for premies or newborns.

Rolling and waking multiple times while swaddled when they hadn't before is the best sign to look for when deciding when to make the transition. This usually happens around the 3-6 month range (which is how our size small is geared). Before then, the startle reflex is often too strong so a swaddle really helps encourage sounder sleep.  A baby will start outgrowing their startle reflex after the 6 month mark, so the closer to that milestone you make the transition, the easier transition your little one will have.  Be sure to have a Zipadee-Zip on hand because the need for a transition will literally happen overnight!  Be sure to read our sizing tips and advice so that you get the right size for the transition!

    • Although we have incredible success with some babies transitioning to the Zipadee-Zip at 2-3 months old, for many babies this young age is a little too early to make the transition, simply because a baby’s startle reflex is still too strong. The smoothest and most immediate transitions happen after 4 or 5 months of age. A baby doesn’t start growing out of that startle reflex until around 6 months old.

Remember, the best transitions happen when your little one tells you they are ready to make the move... you will know!  Making any sort of transition in a baby's life before they are ready, can often result in a longer process than necessary.  If your baby is not rolling from back to front, and is still sleeping well swaddled, wait until they start showing signs that they are ready for more freedom.

If you transition at a younger age, we suggest starting with nap times in the Zipadee-Zip first for a while before night time sleep. This will allow your baby a chance to get used to the freedom over a shorter period of time!  SLIGHT RESISTANCE IN THE FIT OF THE ZIPADEE-ZIP(particularly in the arm-span) IS HELPFUL WHEN MAKING THE TRANSITION OFF OF THE SWADDLE AS IT PROVIDES A COZIER FIT WHICH AIDS IN SELF-SOOTHING.  BE SURE TO READ OUR SIZING TIPS TO MAKE SURE YOU SELECT THE RIGHT SIZE FOR YOUR LITTLE ONE.

    • Understand that every baby is different; some make an immediate transition to the Zipadee-Zip off of the swaddle and some take a little time to get used to their new found freedom.  The best thing to do is make sure the fit of your Zipadee-Zip is not too loose.  There should be some slight resistance in the arm-span of the fit.  That is what gives a baby an enclosed, cozy feel.  It is also helpful to do naps first before night time sleep if you want to provide your little one with a more gradual transition.

If your little one is still sleeping well while swaddled and hasn't yet rolled from back to front, it may be best to wait until they are showing signs they are ready for more freedom.  Be sure to have the Zipadee-Zip on hand for when this happens though, as it literally happens overnight!  When a baby is ready to make the move, the transition is much more immediate.  It's best not to try and push a baby to transition before they are ready as it may prolong the transition time.

  • All About The Zipadee-Zip

    • All of the fabrics from our cotton blend to our poly are especially engineered to be soft and breathable to prevent the risk of overheating. This makes them ideal even for for babies with eczema or sensitive skin.  We never have and never will spray our garments with any chemicals.  All loose fitting baby PJs are required to be fire retardant due to regulations by the CPSC.

We would love to be able to have 100% cotton Zippies, but to do that, we would have to treat them heavily with chemicals.  That is simply not an option for us as the safety of the baby is our number one priority!  We do, however, have wonderful cotton blend Zipadee-Zips available to choose from.  We go to great lengths to comply with baby sleepwear standards and testing without using chemical treatments on our products.  We use fibers that are naturally flame retardant to accomplish this so no harm is caused to those little ones. This prevents any risk to the babies ingesting or being exposed to harsh flame retardant chemicals.  We are one of only a handful of baby sleepwear companies in the world that use this unique, patented technology. We DO make some of our size small Zipadee-Zips in untreated,100% cotton fabric because the law permits us to do this without chemical treatments, but once the sizing moves to a medium, the law requires any 100% cotton garments to be treated with chemicals, which we choose not to do.  We will always ensure that your little ones are sleeping both soundly AND safely!

In addition, we do our very best to keep as much production within the states as we can and pay a higher price to do just that!  We actually grow a lot of our cotton in the United States but have to have our Zipadee-Zip fabric made and sewn overseas since there is sadly no manufacturer within the US that is set up to comply with the US government's regulations for baby sleepwear without the use of harsh chemical treatments.  We also employ women from the U.S. to help you answer any questions you might have to help your little one get the rest you deserve.

    • Wash the Zipadee-Zip zipped up, and inside-out to cut down on pilling.
Wash on gentle cycle and either hang to dry or dry on low heat.  Because the Zipadee-Zip gets so much more wear than a normal outfit for your baby (since it is used for every nap and night time in most cases), it can help to keep these tips in mind.

For little ones who like to suck on the tips of the Zipadee-Zip: before putting your Zipadee-Zip in the wash, simply spray the tips with white vinegar and let it set a bit before washing it!  That should get rid of stubborn drool marks!

Because our Zipadee-Zips aren't chemically treated to ensure the safety of your baby, the fabric may have a little pilling after all the washes it endures but please know that this, in no way, reflects the quality and durability of the fabric used to make them.  We actually pay a premium to get our product made in a way that is safe for those little ones but still complies with regulations and maintains quality and durability.

    • Every baby regulates their body heat differently so please use your best judgement! We suggest that you try and mimic what you are currently doing based on how warm your little one sleeps now.
It’s okay to put light PJs underneath the Zippy! It’s also okay for your little one to only wear a diaper underneath the Zippy!  Although we don't recommend that you put any loose blankets in the crib, for families that live in cooler climates, it might be helpful to order a fleece Zipadee-Zip or layer underneath our regular Zipadee-Zips for added coziness and comfort!

Something to consider from babyslumber.com… “not only do baby’s sleep better in cooler temperatures, but they are also at a lower risk for SIDS.”
